“Toddler space and big kids too”

a review by Catherine Leo

Steamroller Park is a very popular playground near the entrance to Stirling’s main street after you exit the freeway. The fully-fenced playground is part of a larger, leafy corner park with a rotunda, park benches and BBQs. There’s also plenty of shops and cafes to grab a coffee nearby (try Ruby’s Organic Café across the road, or TQ on the same side, as some very nearby options) and there are public toilets just outside the gates. Parking is generous though there is an hour limit in the adjacent carpark.

Half the park is a very open toddler playspace, with a cubby and slide, stepping stones, swings, rockers and little table settings for having a snack. This is fantastic for parents of young ones to be able to utilise only this section if they want to, and because of the ‘L’ shape of the park,  it does feel a little separate from the other part of the playground if you wanted to confine your toddler.

The wider area has a large multi-purpose piece of equipment that includes a rock wall, bridge, tunnels, rope climbing vertical tube, fireman pole, and slippery dip as well as other games and sections. There are a few spots that you need to watch young ones but my 2.5 year old navigated it all pretty easily with only a few moments where he was steered away from a high drop. He whizzed down the slippery dip and ran around to steps to climb up again.

The star of the park, and it’s namesake is an old retired steamroller. At any time you’ll find one year olds up to ten year olds, climbing on the machine, attempting to turn the steering wheels, sliding down the wheels – it’s wonderful to see something that isn’t a standard piece of playground equipment being enjoyed by kids.

There are also swings under the shade of some beautiful tall trees and a number of park benches and tables. It’s very communal and parents and grandparents of all ages seem to enjoy a chat while they watch their little ones.

Kids of all ages will enjoy a visit to Steamroller and if you’re from the Hills you’ll know about it already – but it’s worth a further trip with the option of a Stirling main street stroll for the parents too.
