Top Family Adventures in the City of Adelaide

If your family loves adventure, there are plenty of places in the city which can cater for the people in your life that love to explore and stay on the move. Whether you are walking, riding or simply hopping around the city, here are some great places where kids will be able to play for hours.

Try a Playground Hop

Grab your bikes for a great playground hop starting at Princess Elizabeth Playground. Then hop on your bikes and ride up to the South Terrace Glover Playground to have a go on the popular flying fox.  Riding along, hop off at Marshmallow Park for a fun climbing session on the play equipment. Have a rest at the Himeji Garden, a Japanese garden oasis in the heart of the City and Adelaide’s best-kept secret.

Princess Elizabeth Playground | Mirnu Wirra (Park 21)

A fantastic playground with nature play area and play equipment for all ages.

South Terrace, Adelaide

Marshmallow Playspace and Oxbow Playspace | Pelzer Park / Pityarilla (Park 19)

Updated only last year, the Pityarilla Activity Hub has a renewed creek bed, water play area and a slide which is great news for adventurous kids. The area is fully fenced with shelter and picnic tables, access to BBQs and toilets plus a half basketball court and tennis court. There are swings, slides and a sandpit plus large wooden climbing frames, boulder island and stepping stones.

This tranquil garden really is an oasis at the edge of the city.

Tracks ‘n’ Trees

Got any dare-devils in the family? Explore your wild-side with this adventure lovers’ itinerary starting at Kurangga (Park 20). Then head over to TreeClimb Adelaide for tree-top adventures.

If your kids love bike riding, they will love the newly updated BMX park. There are now 4 tracks which cater for all skill levels.

TreeClimb Adelaide

Adelaide’s first nature-based aerial adventure park offers six elevated tree walk courses, including a range of suspension lines, bridges, flying foxes and climbing obstacles set amongst the beautiful trees of the Adelaide Park Lands.

Splash ‘n’ Ride Day

Try an activity-packed day playing with water features at the Nature Activity Hub at Bonython Park, following the Bunyip Trail at Bonython Park and testing your bike skills and road knowledge at the Road Safety Centre.

Road Safety Centre

The Road Safety Centre allows kids to ride their bikes along tracks which resemble roads and are complete with road signs and traffic lights. Entrance is free. Bring your own bike and helmet.

Bonython Park  (Tulya Wardli) 

Explore Bonython Park which features an amazing nature playground plus water play area. While you are there, take the kids to explore the Bunyip Trail. The Bunyip Trail booklet can be downloaded online. This is a fun activity to do as a family.

Kites ‘n’ Bikes Day

A full day itinerary with the thrill of kite flying, and picture-perfect scenic bike riding starting at the River Torrens. Hire FREE bikes from the kiosk and ride along the River Torrens, starting at Weir (2).  Take a tour with the Popeye or relax on a paddle boat on the Torrens. Spot the local bird life, and have a look at the impressive new footbridge, as you pass by. The riverbank is the perfect spot to fly your kite; and a great location to snap some photos in a setting that is picturesque all year round.

Popeye & Paddle Boats on the River Torrens

Take a leisurely cruise along the River Torrens on the iconic Popeye boat. You can catch Popeye from the landing at Elder Park or from the Adelaide Zoo landing, located down the stairs, below the Frome Road pedestrian crossing closest to the Zoo entrance.

If you would prefer to paddle your way down the river, small paddle boats are also available for hire.

Go on a Bike Ride or Scoot Along the River Torrens Linear Park Trail

The Linear Park pathway allows bikes, scooters, prams and those on foot to enjoy the beautiful views along the River Torrens. There are plenty of spots you can stop at to enjoy a picnic, get a coffee, snack or lunch; or head for a play at the Bonython Park playground which is along this path.

Magical Garden Escape

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city in the whimsical and majestic oasis of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Start at Botanic Park where kids will love climbing over the majestic Moreton Bay fig trees which are over 100 years old and have roots large enough for little children to hide in. Then make your way to the Adelaide Botanic Garden to explore the space-ship like Bicentennial Conservatory, the Garden of Health and the SA Water Mediterranean Garden.

Explore the West

Try something a little different and explore the historic West Terrace Cemetery which has always been a place of intrigue and dates back to the European settlement of South Australia. Then follow the Wirranendi interpretive trail (Park 23) for a one-hour exploration walk. Here you’ll discover natures themes; earth, wind, water and fire, a wetland and sculptures that reflect these. Surrounded by flora and fauna, see if you can get some rubbings from the etched rocks you’ll find at the trail.
