Wilfred Taylor Nature Playground | December 2019
Plans are in place to upgrade and develop a nature playground at Wilfred Taylor Reserve by the City of Onkaparinga, proposed to be completed by December 2019.
The design approach for the nature play space is to move away from the traditional standalone playground and aims to incorporate the wider natural landscape as a key part of the experience. The objective is to create a number of nature play destinations that are strategically integrated into the existing landform. This is intended to encourage children to explore and roam; seeking challenges and acceptable risk-taking. It will also ease play congestion which is often experienced in popular urban play spaces. This spatial set out is more befitting the principals of nature play. Wilfred Taylor Reserve contains a number of established natural landscape elements that provide play affordance and these will be retained and enhanced in the concept design.
After extensive engagement, a draft concept design was recently developed which aims to encourage children to explore and roam within the natural area. Key features of the design include:
- All ability and inclusive play opportunities
- Junior and multi-sensory play
- Numerous play nodes offering a range of adventures
- Artwork and a range of bespoke play items
- Family picnic areas
- Design themes that have both cultural and European focus
- A mixture of nature and adventure play
- Interpretive signage
Engagement activities took place from 22 November 2017 – 5 January 2018 and included surveys and an onsite family fun day where around 1000 locals attended. A huge 77% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with the preliminary draft concept plan for the nature playground.
The concept will proceed to detailed design during the next financial year 2018-19, subject to funding and Council approval. The City of Onkaparinga is currently seeking opportunities for external grant funding towards this initiative to support the development. The State Government has also now confirmed $1.3M State Government funding for construction of the playground by December 2019.
Separate from the Nature Playground, a Master Plan for the Wilfred Taylor Reserve is also being developed.
