Keith Playground
The Adelaide to Melbourne drive is a long one with around eight hours of driving. However if you break it up with a few fun stops it’s actually a pretty good road trip for families.
One of the favourite stops along the way is the Keith Playground. The reason why? It’s because of this classic metal monorail ride. It has three seats and is a firm favourite with kids (and their parents)!

The Keith Monorail ride is pretty simple to operate. Just pull the seat to either start positions at each end at the top of the hills, pile onto the seats, make sure the passengers are hanging on tight, and then give them a push.
It helps to have an adult at each end. The metal seats are heavy and younger kids will have trouble operating it themselves. It’s pretty obvious, but please make sure kids keep their hands and fingers away from the undercarriage area for safety.
The Keith Playground also has one of these dual swings below, which allow you to either sit and swing together with your little one, or swing a baby and another child at the same time. There’s also one of these swings at Jubilee Park Onkaparinga Wooden playground.
There is shade over the playground equipment.
A wooden lookout sits over the sand pit and has a slide.
The sandpit has a ride on sand digger.
The classic flying fox below is a great one and glides across well.
The rotunda is great for some protection from sun or rain.
Picnic tables and benches are available. There are toilets. The playground is not fenced, but it is away from the Highway.
Just nearby in Makin Street, there is the Keith Bakery and Coffee Shop (see map below).
Road trip from Adelaide to Melbourne via the Great Ocean Road
Keith Playground Location:
Adelaide to Keith is approximately 225km via National Highway M1 and National Highway A8 {2 hrs 27 minutes}
Melbourne to Keith is approximately 503km via Western Hwy and National Highway A8 {5 hrs 37 minutes}
It’s a little bit hidden from the Highway as you need to leave the main road and turn into the adjacent access road running parallel.
