We visited Australia’s one and only LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre and it was a LEGO® lover’s paradise!

Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

As soon as we arrived in Melbourne, we picked up our hire car, grabbed a coffee and some food and made a bee-line for Chadstone Shopping Centre. Located in the south-eastern suburb of Malvern East and roughly a 45 minutes drive from the airport, Chadstone is a destination in itself and known for being a fashion and entertainment hub as well as the largest shopping centre in Australia!

We arrived on a busy Thursday afternoon in torrential rain but thankfully because our activity was indoors  we found an undercover car park with ease and made our way inside staying warm and dry! As soon as we got inside we were able to locate a store directory and even though the centre is massive and there are lots of enticing shops to distract you, we found it pretty easy to navigate ourselves through the shopping centre. We also stopped into the parent’s room and found it was clean, spacious and very convenient for visiting with kids.

Making our way to the entrance of LEGOLAND® our kids let out a big squeal when we finally arrived. We followed the signs and came across two LEGO® figures to welcome us and a big aeroplane. Once inside we were taken to the Factory Tour room surrounded by screens where you learn how minifigures are made. You then have a chance to create your own and are then given a small minifigure each (that you can swap later on if you want to). The path then leads you through to a miniature city called Miniland, which is a recreation of Melbourne made out of LEGO® bricks.

Moving further inside we found a soft play zone known as their DUPLO® Farm Adventure which is perfect for ages 2-5 and is great for climbing, crawling and swinging. Right next to the farm is Heartlake City, where you can meet the LEGO® friends. This area is very much targeted to little girls and my daughters absolutely loved this spot. In this area kids have the chance to make their own city and use their imagination to create stories surrounding what they build. Each of the five friends and females with unique personalities so learning about them is also fun for the kids.

Next we decided to check out the rides. We started with the Merlin’s apprentice ride where you sit down and peddle whilst the ride goes around and the faster you peddle the higher you soar. You need to wear closed shoes for this one and be a minimum of 90cm tall. After Merlin’s we jumped on Kingdom Quest, a fun train ride where you zap sneaky skeletons, trolls and bad guys to save the princess. To access this ride you need to be able to sit upright and there are some height restrictions but we did see quite a few young kids loving this ride.

After the rides we enjoyed building a tall tower and putting it to the test on the Earthquake tables. This was a fun surprise for the kids to see the tables start to shake! We then moved onto the LEGO® racers area where you make a racing car and test it out on the track to see who gets to the finish line first. This area was understandably very busy so we had to wait a little while to explore this part. The kids also enjoyed playing on the jungle gym at LEGO® City Fire Academy, another soft play area perfect for kids aged 4 and up.

My youngest daughter is under the sea obsessed and was very drawn to the Underwater Quest area where you can build your own creatures and see all of the cool LEGO® creations.

During our visit we also saw a creative workshop area that offered hourly sessions where kids can learn insider tips and tricks in a small, calm environment. If you arive outside of session times you can put your name down and enjoy the rest of the centre while you wait. As we were short on time we didn’t do this but would love to return and experience this again. We ended our visit at the LEGO® 4D cinema where you are given glasses and even get to experience wind, rain and snow during the session. We found watching the movie at the end was a nice way to wind down and a good final stop before the drive back to our hotel.

To leave LEGOLAND® you have to walk through the LEGO® store and even though we weren’t planning on purchasing anything we found a few small items that were perfect to take with us to the hotel. There were some big items that were quite costly but we found there was a good range of toys to suit a variety of budgets.

We visited the LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre with two adults and two girls aged five and seven. As a family we absolutely loved this activity and would recommend it to anyone visiting Melbourne with kids as it was interactive, appealing for a variety of ages and not weather dependant, which can be quite important for Melbourne! We spent nearly three hours there but could have easily spent longer if we had the time.

There is a café on site and being located in Chadstone Shopping Centre means you can pair this activity with a shop or bite to eat either inside the centre on in LEGOLAND® itself.

So if you have LEGO® loving kids, definitely put LEGOLAND® Discovery Centre on your Melbourne vacation must visit list!

What we like about it

  • We loved how interactive it was and how it catered to a variety of age groups
  • We loved the rides and the multiple opportunities to foster creativity

Things to Consider:

  • The cafe on site is costly so consider eating before or after your visit to save some money
  • If you do visit the cinema be mindful that the 4D can make you feel motion sick if you are sensitive to this and sit in the back rows if you don’t want to get wet
  • Its a good idea for the whole family to wears shoes and socks so you can make the most of your visit
  • Expect it to be busy during peak times and try to go outside of school holidays hours if you can and early on in the day to maximise your time
  • You can purchase a standalone entry pass to LEGOLAND but if you are staying in the city and know you also want to visit SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium too you can save money with a combined pass

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

  • We had a great take away coffee downstairs at Little Sparrow Melbourne

Location:

Level 2/1341 Dandenong Rd, Chadstone VICTORIA
