Lights at Mawson – a free family-friendly lights trail with fireworks is the perfect excuse for a winter night out with the family!

Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji

Last night we rugged up the kids and headed to Mawson Lakes for a night of family-friendly fun. We arrived before dark and the Boulevard was already buzzing with excitement. There were kids drawing on the road with chalk, playing games of tennis and connect four and running around with toys that lit up.

We started our night with an easy dinner at Nik’s BBQ on the lake. We settled on chips and yiros meat and the whole family absolutely devoured it. This restaurant is a popular choice, offering delicious Greek cuisine with dine-in and takeaway options. Other popular restaurants on the strip include Tamarind Modern Indian, the Boat Deck café and Relish on Main. Being right on the Boulevard, these places were quite busy, so it’s a good idea to book ahead or arrive early to avoid disappointment.

After feeding the hungry troops, we were just in time to catch the first fireworks show at 6pm. This was such a treat to see as the water was lit up with a flame and pyrotechnic show. After the show we decided to do a loop of the lake to see what was on offer. There were huge illuminated inflatable artworks placed around the lake, which made for a fun trail to visit them all. There was a glowing light maze and a really sweet fairy garden that my daughters loved.

Directly across the lake we came across a silent disco which, in our opinion, is a must-stop for families. When you enter, you are given headphones which connect to three channels and one specifically for kids. The silent disco space is small, with flashing lights, bubbles pumped out, and only a limited number of people allowed in at a time. After a little dance-off, we continued our way around the lake. We noticed geese on our travels, a light-up bridge and a bunch of interactive light games. There was also mini golf on offer.

What we liked about the experience was that it was free, well spaced out, offered a bunch of different attractions for kids, and had a fun, family-friendly atmosphere. There was live music, games set up for kids, seats and heaters dotted throughout the Boulevard.

We ended our night by watching the 7:30pm show in a different spot, then made our way home. Our kids love fireworks, so it was great that the shows were spaced out, offering early times for families not to miss out on the fun.

We had a great time at the Lights at Mawson event. We made the most of it by arriving early, rugging up, and planning our dinner ahead of time. Next time, we would grab a hot chocolate from St Louis and enjoy the walk with a warm beverage whilst braving the cold.

So if you are looking for a fun, family-friendly activity to end the school holidays, don’t miss out on the Lights at Mawson!

What we like about it

  • The family friendly environment, all of the pretty lights and the free activities for kids

Things to Consider:

  • We went on Friday night, and it was quite busy. It got busier and more hectic the later it got, so we definitely recommend arriving early to soak up the fun, see the early light show and to find a park
  • As soon as the sun went down, it was freezing, so dress accordingly
  • Lights at Mawson are on from the 17 to Sunday19 July from 5pm – 10pm. The light show times are 6pm, 7:30pm and 9pm each night

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

  • We had a great experience at Nike BBQ on the lake, if you eat beforehand and just go for dessert, St Louis Mawson Lakes is a great option
