Maho Magic Bar: Adelaide Fringe 2024

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five stars for an amazing atmosphere & upbeat vibes!

Review by Sharon Harrington

Returning to the Adelaide Fringe in 2024, the Maho Magic Bar is an interactive magic experience set in a neon lit Tokyo-inspired bar, where you can relax with a drink or two, while magicians wow you with their illusions.

There’s no lining up for half an hour to get great seats at this show, just grab your table number and wait in the adjoining outdoor Maho Mini Bar until the show starts.

The bar itself is a gorgeous pop up venue set in The Garden of Unearthly Delights. As you enter, you’ll notice blush-coloured cherry blossoms hanging from the ceiling, Japanese lanterns glowing in the entrance, and walls of shelving displaying beautiful bottles of Japanese spirits.

The set up of this venue is perfect for a magic show. The audience is seated in small groups at the timber bar or centre table, with their own charismatic bartender/magician as their host. There are a number of different bartender/magicians each with a different set of tricks who rotate between each group.

Highlights of the show this year include sleight of hand card tricks, a floating crystal ball and a fork that inexplicably bends in all shapes with just a tap of a finger. In between sets, there are a few larger, more raucous comedy style acts to entertain the whole audience together.

Drinks on offer are delicious sounding cocktails, beer, wines, and a good selection of non-alcoholic drinks, such as lychee iced tea and sparkling apple juice.

We attended one of the evening sessions, which are tailored for adults, however, there are also family friendly shows available before 6pm. I’m sure kids would love these shows as the performers are zany and a loads of fun!

This show is all about the experience: the venue is cool, the magicians are charming, and the whole 60 minutes is upbeat and fun. Kampai to a great night out!
