Pelican Productions Musical Theatre Camp – We’re All Made of Stars

Review by Jo Parkinson

When Pelican Productions named their latest show ‘We’re all made of stars’ they certainly chose well. There were some absolute superstars on display, with promising futures in musical theatre.

We were lucky enough to attend one of the seven performances held at Westminster College, and boy were we impressed! Consisting of approximately 400 talented performers aged 7 to 20, Pelican Productions cleverly put the show together in just 2 weeks during their latest Musical Theatre Camp. There were three separate casts, each presenting the same program.

The Show

The show ran for approximately two and a half hours, split into two entertaining acts. Each act consisted of short highlights from several musicals and movies. These included Matilda, Muriel’s Wedding, Tangled, Hercules, Shrek and more. There was a junior section and senior section, and each musical was highlighted by outstanding ‘spotlight’ soloists.

It was a singing and dancing extravaganza, that held the audience captivated.

Each musical smoothly transitioned to the next, with the help of digital images projected onto screens. The costumes were incredible, considering the size of the cast and the number of different changes.

We were impressed with the entire production; the singing and dancing were of such a high standard. The faculty at Pelican Productions includes industry professionals and it certainly showed through the quality of their students work on stage.

We loved the way the Directors, Jen Frith and Kylie Green came onto the stage at the end and presented some awards for outstanding students. It was a nice touch and very heart-warming. You could sense the passion, commitment, friendship and fun that everyone involved had. It’s clear to see why performers come back year after year to experience the joy of working on shows like this.

Because of the length of the performance, I wouldn’t recommend it for very young children. However, I took my 7-year-old daughter who loves musical theatre and she sat mesmerised throughout the entire show. So if you have a child who is interested in performing, it is wonderful inspiration to watch other children on stage.

Classes

To be a part of Pelican Productions shows, you do not have to attend classes as they hold open casting calls. But if you have a child that is interested in learning about singing, dancing and acting or just wants to gain confidence and try something new, then classes at ‘The Nest’ are highly recommended.

The ‘Nest’ is located at 57a, Price St in Mitcham and there are several classes to choose from:

  • Pelican Academy (Fridays 4:30pm – 8:00pm) is where you can learn all there is to know about musical theatre. Build skills in singing, dancing, and acting and learn from experienced and knowledgeable tutors
  • Acting Classes (Tuesdays, 4:30pm – 5:15pm for 7-11 years, 5:15pm – 6:15pm for 12-17 years) Students learn a range of theatrical acting styles as well as scene and camera work
  • Smash (Tuesdays, 4:15pm – 5:15pm for 12-17 years, 5:15pm to 6pm for 7 to 11 years) is a dance class focusing on fun, whilst learning choreography and improving technique without the pressure of competitions

Make sure you keep an eye out for the next Pelican Production, you won’t want to miss it!
