Nature Festival | Calling All Adventure Seekers | Review

We had a beautiful morning planting seeds of sunshine and spending time doing sunflower related activities during Adelaide’s Nature Festival.

Nature Festival is an awesome annual event that takes place across South Australia at the end of September until mid October and features a range of experiences spanning wellbeing, gardens, outdoor, art plus much more. There are events to suit people from all walks of life and lots of family friendly activities.
The 2026 theme was “seed” and despite wanting to attend all of the events on offer we did manage to attend a fantastic kid-friendly experience. The event was called Seeds of Sunshine and was led by a lovely nature based homeschool community group called Calling all Adventure Seekers.

Set beside the Hope Valley Reservoir playground, we came together on the mats laid out on the grass for a morning of calm, nature based learning and crafty fun. This experience was designed to embrace curiosity, give adults and children the chance to slow down and reconnect and learn about the beautiful journey of the sunflower.

On arrival we met Sarah and her family and were invited to gather together on the playmats provided. Our morning started with story time which was a nice way to set the theme and capture kids attention from the start. We then had the opportunity to plant a take-home sunflower seed inside the middle of a sunflower picture. The kids particularly loved dampening their cotton buds and sticking together their creation.

We then used the paints and craft material provided to make a Sunflower Self Love Bloom. The kids had sunflower drawings set up to inspire them or they could use their imagination to create their own design. After letting the painting dry, they cut out little flower stems and wrote their chosen affirmations on the back before sticking them onto the painting. Some of our chosen affirmations were “I am loved”, “I am good at running” and “I am kind”. The painting was a really nice was to mindfully disconnect and spend time sparking joy with the kids. After the crafting was done the kids made a sunflower seed bomb that we took home and planted in the garden.

The whole morning was relaxing, well set up and a great example of play based learning. We had a great time connecting with other families and would absolutely attend other events run by this homeschool group.

If you missed out on attending this event but like the sounds of this activity, Calling all Adventure Seekers do run other events, you can visit their social media pages for more information. Also keep an eye out next year for the Nature Festival program – each annual event features over 350+ community led events so it’s best to plan early to avoid disappointment!
