Ocean Fest for World Environment Day

Go along for an afternoon of interactive fun and adventure whilst learning about South Australia’s iconic coastal marine environments.

This June, celebrate World Environment Day, World Oceans Day and World Reef Day at the Marine Discovery Centre. Join the Marine Discovery Team team for an afternoon of interactive fun and adventure whilst learning about South Australia’s iconic coastal and marine environments.

Activities:

Dr Zoe Doubleday Presentation:

The event will feature a presentation from marine biologist Dr Zoe Doubleday, which will be perfect for high school students. Have you ever thought about becoming a marine biologist? Or have you ever wanted to know what a marine biologist actually does? Zoe will talk about what it’s like working as a marine biologist and how she got to where she is today. Her presentation will also break down some of the preconceptions people have about careers in STEM.

Interactive Activities:

After the half-hour presentation, all ages can join the team at the Marine Discovery Centre for an afternoon of interactive fun, marine-based learning and recycled craft activities. During the session, you will have access to a variety of interactive discovery stations including Kaurna learning, sea aquariums, brand new virtual reality headsets, brand new hands-on games and recycled craft activities.

Interactive models feature brand new diving games, brand new beachcombing game plus oceanography, brand new sounds of the ocean game, brand fish schooling experience, climate change interactive, marine debris, marine habitats, touchscreens, sustainable fishing, stormwater, beachcombing, and get hands-on with microscopes.

Aquariums:

There will be aquariums featuring local South Australian marine creatures such as the Port Jackson Shark, Tasmanian horned blenny, Big-Bellied Seahorses, Southern Fiddler Ray, Porcupine Fish, Murray River Turtle and more.

Virtual Reality Headsets:

Brand new Virtual Reality Headsets will give participants the opportunity to explore under the sea without getting wet. Underwater virtual reality experiences include Australian Sea Lions, Leafy Seadragons, swimming under the Henley Beach Jetty, and Google Expeditions to the Great Barrier Reef.
