Origin Coffee Bar

Origin Coffee Bar – coffee and a free indoor playground – Review 2013

The Origin Coffee Bar is an initiative by the Victory Church in Pooraka. It’s not specifically a play cafe as such, it’s more like a cafe with a children’s indoor playground attached.

And unlike a play cafe, the play area is a separate room to the dining area, and quite well insulated I might add, so patrons in the cafe can eat and drink without the usual play cafe noise.  There is no entrance fee to play in the playground. Kids get to play for free.

Editor’s note: Origin Coffee Bar closed to the public as of August 2018

The playground is large with triple slides, twisty slide and smaller slide into the ball pit. There’s plenty of climbing and exploring fun to keep kids entertained.

To make it easier for you to supervise your kids, there is a passage all the way around the playground so you can see where they are. As mentioned earlier, the play area is a separate room from the cafe. There are a couple of large windows between the two rooms, but unless you are seated near those windows in the cafe, you will not be able to supervise your kids from your table. Also, kids need to wear socks to play on the equipment.

The menu includes breakfast, lunch and snacks as well as coffee of course, and kids meals include a drink and ice-cream (current as of July 2013).

The day we visited there were several childrens’ Birthday parties happening. As there is no fee for playing in the playground, only the food expense, it is a very economical option for a child’s party. There is plenty of space and enough tables for large gatherings.

During the week I can imagine this would be a perfect meeting place for mother’s groups as there is plenty of space for prams. Origin has been well designed with a warm ambience and modern decor, which belies the industrial warehouse look from the street. There is also plenty of free parking in the complex.

This is a great place for families and the community in general.  The Coffee Bar is open to the public – you do not need to be a member of the Church to visit, in case you were wondering. There are high chairs available and nappy changing facilities.
