Qingdao Rose Garden Opening | Veale Gardens | 25 Feb 2018

Qingdao Rose Garden Opening

In 2001 Adelaide and Qingdao entered into a Friendly City agreement which later evolved into a Sister City relationship in 2013. The Adelaide – Qingdao Rose Garden celebrates the relationship between the City of Adelaide and the City of Qingdao.

Join Martin Haese – Lord Mayor of Adelaide and the City of Adelaide to officially open the Adelaide Qingdao Rose Garden in Veale Gardens and enjoy a range of free and fun activities with your family and friends. Adelaide’s Sister City relationship with Qingdao is extremely important and this garden symbolises the strong bond of friendship between Adelaide and Qingdao.

The statue Song of the Wind which forms the centrepiece of the Adelaide- Qingdao Rose Garden, was generously donated by the Qingdao Municipal People’s Government.

The original version of this sculpture stands in the Little Qingdao Park in the City of Qingdao. The young girl, holding an ancient Chinese harp – Konghou, plays the symphony of the sea and the city. The two statues echo each other across the seas, bonding the friendship between Qingdao and Adelaide.

The red roses symbol life and celebration in Chinese culture. The City of Qingdao rose was bred and donated by George Thomson, a renowned South Australian rose hybridist. This rose is a fitting symbol of the warm and sincere friendship between both cities.

There will be also be:

  • Family activities
  • Lion dance & Face painting
  • Calligraphy & Oriental Fan workshops
  • Live Music

This is a free event.
