Re-thinking Australian Art

A re-presenting of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s Australian Collection

In a year that marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, which resulted in constitutional rights for Australia’s first people, the Gallery will re-present its Australian collection. This series of new displays highlights the complex and radical changes that occurred in Australian art after the Second World War, including the revelation of Aboriginal art, the Feminist art movement and the rise of conceptual art and post modernism.

The rehang will challenge preconceptions of art in Australia as being isolated or singular. From the words of art historian Ian McLean, the re-presentation of the collection will:

“examine the place of Australia in the world and the world in Australia”.

The display will be held in Gallery 6 and it is free entry.
