Shebah – All-female rideshare service for women and children
Shebah is Australia’s first and only active all-female rideshare service for women and children. We thought this was such a fantastic idea we just had to share it and we can’t believe it hasn’t been done sooner.
Shebah was founded by George McEncroe, a former ABC breakfast host, comedian and mother of four, in response to a lack of rideshare options to suit her family’s needs. Since launching in March 2017, on International Women’s Day, it has expanded around Australia to include Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Hobart, Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide and Perth. Darwin will also be active soon.
Catching a Shebah means you don’t need to feel vulnerable getting a ride late at night. And if you need someone to drive your kids somewhere when you can’t, this is a handy and safe option. The Instagram post below is of the Adelaide ladies who currently drive for Shebah.
Shebah operates via an app which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Using the Shebah app, riders can set a location and request a ride. They are then notified when their driver will be arriving. All payments are made via the app.
Shebah is designed to enable women, school-aged children and unaccompanied children to travel safely at any time of day in safety. Boys up to 18 can ride as a passenger if the trip is either to or from school. The system allows passengers to know exactly where the car is and who is behind the wheel, with unique identifiers for each rider and driver. Passengers will be able to identify each car by its colour and rego, with a supplied photo and phone number of the driver making communication easy.
Parents of junior riders are encouraged to use FaceTime with their kids if anyone is anxious at any stage, and capsules and toddler seats can be pre-booked via the app.
Shebah’s all-female drivers have undergone extensive background searches and safety checks to create a safer alternative for passengers. This wholly Australian-owned company allows it’s drivers to work when it suits them and they can also feel safe about who they pick up. Their drivers keep 85% of their fares which means these women have greater economic freedom.
What a wonderful initiative giving women and families a new option for safe rides.
