Shopping for people with autism – Coles introduces “Quiet Hour” shopping

In an effort to make shopping for people living with autism easier, Coles has just introduced a “Quiet Hour” across many of its stores nationwide. What this will mean for people with autism, or parents of kids with autism, is that during this hour long period each Tuesday from 10:30am to 11:30am, participating Coles stores will provide a sensory-friendly experience.

People with autism can find the usual shopping experience overwhelming when they experience what’s called sensory overload due to the bright lights, music and sounds. The Coles “Quiet Hour” will make shopping a more low-sensory experience by:

  • dimming lights
  • turning the in-store “Coles Radio” to the lowest volume
  • offering free fruit at customer service
  • having trained team members available to assist customers
  • dialling the register tones down
  • suspending trolley collections

South Australian stores offering the Coles “Quiet Hour” shopping experience:

  • Tea Tree Plaza
  • Parkholme
  • Anzac Highway
  • Mount Barker
  • Port Pirie

Other shops offering a “Quiet Hour” shopping experience

We understand that Cara has helped implement Quiet Hour Shopping at other shops in Adelaide including:

  • The Good Guys Mile End
  • Frewville Foodland – Tuesdays 6:30pm-8pm
  • Pasadena Foodland – Wednesdays 6:30pm-8pm
