Twelftree Reserve Playground in College Park

Kids will love the fire engine, motorbikes and half basketball court at Twelftree Reserve, and parents will be pleased to know that great coffee is not too far away.

It’s not often we stumble across a playground that will appeal to both toddlers and bigger kids. Twelftree Reserve would be a great choice for a birthday party or a pit-stop after a bike ride along Linear Park as there’s a couple of BBQs there plus picnic tables.

Or you could just do as we did and indulge in an almond croissant from Fix Specialty Coffee. Nom nom.

Coffee and croissants aside, Twelftree Reserve has loads of space to play for the bigger kids with enough room to kick a footy, plus a half basketball court for them to practise their cool moves.

There are two separate playgrounds areas, close to each other. One is geared towards little people, and one more for slightly older children. There is so much to do for smaller kids with two sets of swings including two toddler swings, an oversized seesaw featuring a dolphin and a koala, a very gentle four-directional seesaw that our toddlers just loved, two ride-on motorbikes on big springs, two slides and even a fire engine to ride in.

The little kids’ playground has a ramp to climb up and a slide.

The slide in the bigger kids’ playground was more of a challenge. Who doesn’t love a challenge?

The four-way seesaw is low enough to the ground for toddlers to get on and off by themselves and it is reassuringly sturdy too.

Location

Located on the corner of Richmond Street and Torrens Street in College Park (see the map below), Twelftree Reserve may have a name that’s hard to spell, and make you feel like you’re speaking with a lisp, but as a playground option for big and small kids it’s an easy choice.

Plus did I mention that there’s great coffee over the road!?

Fix Specialty Coffee College Park

Fix Specialty Coffee serves Wide Open Road roasted coffee from Melbourne and has a small but delicious looking array of food.

It being coffee o’clock we decided it would be wrong not to indulge in one of their Abbots and Kinney pastries.

Not only do they make a mean coffee but they also have a selection of teas.

In my other life I am the person who goes to cafes and sits reading the newspaper, soaking up the ambience of the cafe…But there’s nothing wrong with takeaway coffee and a trip to the park.

There’s also outdoor seating and space to sit with your pram while you enjoy a coffee.

What we love about Twelftree Reserve

❤️ Established trees provide shade plus there’s a shade sail over part of the playground

❤️ The fire engine with all its windows to peep out of, and steering wheels to turn, is a magnet for little people and provides opportunities for social interaction

❤️ Two play areas cater to two separate age groups, e.g. the slides are of varying difficulty

❤️It’s a hop skip and a jump from the reserve to the picturesque St Peter’s Billabong for a nature walk or some bird spotting

Things to consider

❤️ Although the entire reserve is not fully fenced, the south edge of the park has fencing along three sides

❤️ Cars can travel quite quickly along Richmond Road

❤️ The playground does have bark – not ideal if your toddler likes to put bark in their mouth

❤️ We had excellent coffees from Fix Speciality Coffee over the road (where the College Park Deli used to be).

❤️ Alternatively you could do a quick detour to the ever popular St Peter’s Bakehouse and Coffee Shop on the corner of Seventh Ave and Stephen Tce (about a 10 minute walk)
