Undertone | Adelaide Fringe Festival 2016 | Review

Undertone

Undertone presents audiences with an experiment in the integration of electronic music and circus.

Each year the Fringe Festival program is bursting with experimental circus and physical theatre pieces aiming to stand out from the crowd and break the mould. Undertone achieves this with an honest and authentic performance by Victorian group ‘Black Carnation Productions’.

In the intimate venue, the Ukiyo tent at The Royal Croquet Club, Undertone is both cheeky and awe-inspiring, achieving a great balance of ‘wow’ moments and endearing comedy. The artists combine circus, dance and theatre in a quirky show that is elegantly backed by live electronic music. The soundtrack, created by the on-stage musician and DJ integrates triggering and samples taken from the live performance exploring the relationship between sound and movement.

Undertone has a deliberately un-polished feel to it and whilst there were a few mishaps and stumbles it’s this slightly ‘rough around the edges’ feel that gives the show its authenticity. The artists are extremely talented in their craft and there is no shortage of impressed gasps from the audience as the performers move skilfully from aerial stunts, juggling, pole performances and interpretive dance.

Undertone encompasses the essence of the Adelaide Fringe Festival; presenting fringe-goers with something unique, accessible and authentic. It’s a great genuine Fringe Festival experience that touches the heart of what this festival was built on; offering a platform for new and experimental art.

With a family-friendly time slot of 6:30pm and a ‘G’ classification this is a show that can easily be enjoyed with the whole family, or equally suited to a ‘kid-free’ evening out.

Undertone is playing at Ukiyo in The Royal Croquet Club each night (excluding Monday 7th March) at 6:30pm
