Unveiling of Guards Brake Van 8394 | National Railway Museum | 18 & 19 Mar 2017

“Ever ridden in a heritage carriage more than 100 years old, or ridden in a train with a 1950s diesel up the front?”

The National Railway Museum is presenting a special Heritage Diesel Train weekend, with an opportunity to ride in a vintage carriage, hauled by a 1956 built diesel electric locomotive.

Diesel 801 was built in Queensland and used all around the Adelaide metro area, hauling freight and passenger trains until withdrawn in 1992. It is the sole survivor of its type, now maintained by volunteers at the railway museum.

Carriage 376 was built at Islington Workshops for the Glenelg railway line in the early 1900s, and spent all its life making trips around the broad gauge network of South Australia, until 1978.

Being unveiled also on the weekend, after a great restoration project, is Guards Brakevan No.8394. This carriage was the last of its type built by the South Australian Railways at Islington Workshops in 1971.

The heritage diesel train will be operating 15 minute return trips, during both days, using the museum’s 1km long running track at Port Adelaide. Fares are just $3 for adults, with under 15 years riding for free, and rides behind Ken the little green diesel (no charge).
