Wakefield Reserve l Morphett Vale l Review

Wakefield Reserve in Morphett Vale has had a fabulous upgrade, thanks to The City of Onkaparinga’s community engagement initiative.

Review by Jo Parkinson

Wakefield Reserve is situated on Acre Avenue in Morphett Vale, not far from Southgate Plaza Shopping Centre. It is spread out over a large area, with two separate playgrounds that are connected by a sealed pathway.

Local residents were invited to share their thoughts on what improvements they would like to see in the massive $400,000 upgrade of Wakefield Reserve and with construction now complete, some of those ideas have been implemented for everyone to enjoy.

Playgrounds

The first play area has some natural elements incorporated, with a log construction that children will love to climb on. There is also a more traditional type of playground with a slide, climbing net and fireman pole. Very young children may require assistance to reach the top of the structure.

We love that the swing set has 4 swings available instead of the usual 2, so kids don’t have to wait as long for a turn, including 2 seats for babies.

This play area is closest to the basketball and half netball court, as well as a lush green lawn where there are both football and soccer goals set up to practice goal scoring. So don’t forget to bring your ball along!

There are a couple of undercover shelters with tables and seats along the path, perfect if you want to bring some lunch or a picnic. Smaller children may like to bring a bike or scooter to ride along the path, and the sealed surface also makes it easier for those with prams.

At the other end of the path is another play space. We love a park with a flying fox, and Wakefield Reserve has a super fun one! It’s a great length and it’s the best seeing the kids faces as they race along the wire and stop at the end.

Our kids also loved the 4-way swing spinner and spent ages on here. It also gave me a workout pushing them around and around!

There is also another set of swings here as well, including a net swing, baby swing and regular swing.

Wakefield Reserve is a wonderful space for everybody to enjoy and we recommend checking it out for yourself!

Things to Consider:

  • There are no toilets at this reserve, the closest public toilets are located at Southgate Plaza
  • The play space is not fenced, so although it’s not super close to roads, supervision is necessary especially for young children
  • Remember to slip, slop, slap as the play areas are not shaded
  • This playground is great for children aged from approximately 5 years +. Due to the nature of the equipment, smaller children and toddlers may have difficulty climbing

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

Just a couple of minutes drive away from the reserve is Southgate Plaza Shopping Centre. Here you will find a good selection of places to grab a bite to eat including

  • Palace Espresso Bar
  • Sushi Hiro
  • Cherry Blossom Sushi
  • Bami Vietnamese
  • Southgate Yiros
  • Southgate Cafe and Snack Bar

Most of these places have dine in or takeaway options. Southgate Plaza Shopping Centre is located at the corner of Sherriffs Rd and Hillier Rd, Morphett Vale
