Willunga Farmers Market | Review

Taste the region and soak up the fun OF A FARMERS’  family-friendly atmosphere of a Saturday morning in Willunga!

No matter how many times I have visited the Willunga Farmers Market, I always make a detour to experience the buzz of the markets on a Saturday morning. On a recent getaway staying at the fabulous vacation rental Shellwater at Shellicks Beach, we had zero plans for our weekend except a visit to the markets and they were even better than we remembered.

Pulling up to the entrance mid-morning it was plain to see that that this attraction certainly draws a crowd.  Cars were parked everywhere and the grounds were buzzing with sounds, smells and a lively vibe. First things first, we made our way to one of the two coffee vans that was brimming with locals waiting to enjoy their morning brew.

After a caffeine hit our kids pulled us towards a gorgeous honey stand called Bush Organics. We had visited this stall years before when my daughter had a rash and dry lips and we purchased a calendula salve and it worked like magic. My daughter instantly remembered it and rushed over to try their other products, sampling all of their delicious Kangaroo Island honey in the process.

Next, we wandered towards the centre of the markets and happened to stumble upon a butter making activity infused with native ingredients and ran by the lovely people at Fleurieu Food and Wine. Before we knew it, we were being handed small jars of Fleurieu milk and shown how to shake it into butter. It took a bit of time to get the hang of it but before long the consistency changed and we had a cute little jar of butter with bush tomato to take home with us. This was a simple activity but really fun for everyone, especially the kids.

Moving further around the markets we decided to grab some sweet treats and settled on the most delicious almond croissants and a gluten free lamington. We then washed them down with cold pressed sparking pink lemonade from the Garden Farmers which went down a treat!

On our way out we decided to stock up on some goat’s cheese, organic greens and fresh pasta to create a delicious meal back at Shellwater. We also found a little stall offering native flowers in a jar that we couldn’t resist. We spent two and a half hours at the markets and we honestly lost track of time it was so enjoyable.

Everyone is friendly, there is a plethora of local produce on offer. It’s a great farm to shopping bag experience where you meet locals, chat to growers and find out more about where your food comes from and the people creating, growing and championing the region.

Willunga Farmers Market is located on the grounds of the Willunga High School and is open every Saturday from 8am to 12 noon, rain, hail or shine!

There are special guests that often come to cook and run activities and the best way to keep up to date is to follow the Willunga Farmers Market on social media. We had a picture-perfect morning exploring the markets, stocking up on local products and taking part in the activities on offer. We recommend the markets to foodie-loving families and to anyone that finds themselves in the region.

• This place gets busy and some stalls can sell out so arrive early to avoid missing out
