Woorabinda Bushland Reserve | Stirling | Review

If you’re heading to the hills and looking for somewhere to take the kids that’s close to Stirling, try a leisurely visit to Woorabinda Lake.

Woorabinda Lake and surrounding bushland reserve is tucked into the side streets of Stirling, next to the Railway line. You can walk down Ethel Street to access the lake and reserve or drive for about 2 minutes, heading down Mabel Street which turns into Woorabinda Drive where there is a small amount of off-street parking available directly out the front.

Walking Trails

It is an easy stroll right around the lake and there are a variety of birds to keep a lookout for. There is a bird hide on the opposite side of the lake where you can sit quietly and watch the lovely birds. There is a poster in the hide which shows which birds frequent the area. You might even be lucky enough to spot a Superb Fairywren.

There are a mixture of walking trails and boardwalks which are quite relaxing to wander. The main trail around the lake feeds off into other trails which take you to different reserves.

Other things of interest

If you head to Woorabinda on a Wednesday, you are likely to see miniature remote-controlled yachts buzzing around the lake or, you might even get a very close view of the train as it rolls by. There are also a series of trails that depart from the lake.

If you want to leave a poem for other visitors, you’ll find a wooden box filled with poems, attached to a seat near the bird hide. It’s on the opposite side of the lake to the entrance area.

Tips for visiting

  • While not made with prams in mind, most of the tracks are flat (but unsurfaced) with a few gentle inclines. Prams with large wheels will manage here, but there are a few bumps. If taking a pram, you will need to stick close to the lake, as the walking tracks get a bit narrower and steeper the further you walk.
  • There is no fencing around the lake plus there are jetties for the kids to wander onto, so close supervision is needed at all times.
  • This is a great place for some simple, relaxing nature play. There are birds to look out for, creatures in the water, bugs hiding in the grass and interesting plants. Koala’s have also been spotted up in the trees.

Don’t Feed the Ducks

Remember NOT to feed the ducks. It might be fun, but it can make them sick, and they can die.

  • There are bench seats along the walking tracks, toilet facilities with ramp access by the entrance gate and some flat grassed areas suitable for picnics.
  • Dogs are allowed on leashes, bikes are not permitted.
