True-blue early-morning Olympic-sized beachside Aussie Celebrations: Australia Day at the Bay!

Celebrate Australia Day with 85 new citizens from 17 countries, 6 awards, 1,000+ snags + 1 Olympian at 9am-2pm on Thursday 26 January 2017 at the Glenelg Foreshore.

City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Stephen Patterson says this year’s Australia Day at the Bay offers a true-blue beachside Australia Day experience, with an early community barbecue breakfast from 7am, official ceremonies from 9am to welcome new Australian citizens and celebrate local heroes, and a big, free family fun day on the Glenelg Foreshore PLUS the opportunity to congratulate Holdfast Bay’s own Olympic swimming champ, Kyle Chalmers, as he receives the keys to the City of Holdfast Bay!

“We will do three very important things on Australia Day: we will help 85 very excited and proud people from 17 countries make their citizenship pledge; we will present Australia Day and Community Recognition awards to some incredible community contributors; and we’ll present our own Olympic Gold Medallist, Kyle Chalmers, with the keys to our city – so it’s set to be a truly heart-warming day.” -Mayor Stephen Patterson

Mayor Patterson will welcome special guests including Dr Duncan McFetridge MP, State Member for Morphett; Steve Georganas MP, Federal Member for Hindmarsh; and 2017 Australia Day Ambassador, Bruce Mackay, former Chief Commissioner of Scouts SA to the morning’s official ceremonies. In keeping with tradition, the City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band will open the ceremony with the national anthem.

Local Kiwanis will cook a Community Fundraiser Barbecue Breakfast from 7am until 9am, when the official ceremony begins, and when the formalities finish at around 10.30am, the Glenelg beach and foreshore will buzz with free, all-ages, family-friendly Australia Day at the Bay activities.

“We’re encouraging everyone to come down to Glenelg to enjoy some free Australia Day at the Bay activities, including Come ’n’ Try Beach Volleyball, active games with Life. Be in it, live music with The Timbers plus free face-painting, balloon twisting and some magic tricks,” Mayor Patterson said.

And of course, families can also enjoy the simple outdoor pleasures of the award-winning Glenelg Foreshore Playspace and beautiful Glenelg Beach – while thrill-seekers of all ages can have a go at conquering the Big Wedgie giant inflatable water slides at Colley Reserve.

Plus, Jetty Road’s huge range of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants will be open, so it’s really worth coming down and spending Australia Day at the Bay.

There will also be a citizenship ceremony, welcoming 85 people from 17 countries to take the oath to become Australian citizens. Those countries are Argentina, Brazil, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and Vietnam.

The Australia Day Ambassador for 2017 is Bruce Mackay – Yachtsman (Sydney to Harbour Yacht Race; Clipper 07-08 Race), volunteer for Operation Flinders and former Chief Commissioner of Scouts SA.
