Rymill Park Lake Upgrade Complete | Open from April 2024

Adelaide’s Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) is now open after extensive lake repairs and improvements.

Rymill Park is one of our most loved and frequently used recreational spaces in Adelaide and features the Rymill Park Quentin Kenihan Inclusive Playground.   The lake is the park’s centrepiece and features a small island with a bridge each side, accessed via a path for walking, running or riding bikes and scooters.

The Lake in Rymill Park was closed in August 2023 to undergo a $6 million upgrade to make it more environmentally friendly and cost-effective to maintain for the Adelaide City Council.

The artificial lake required renewal to address structural decline, a leaking base and ongoing poor water quality and amenity.  Originally constructed in 1959 and opened in 1960, it has now been repaired so that it can be enjoyed for many more years to come. There are also pathway and lighting improvements around the lake.

A new pipeline now connects the Victoria Park/Pakapakanthi wetlands to Rymill Lake as its main water supply.  Harvested stormwater is stored in large underground tanks within Rymill Park, which is then cleaned through a natural filtration system using aquatic plants, sand and soil.

NEW CAFE PLANS

Rymill Park was well know for having colourful row boats for hire and a cafe on the lake’s edge, making it a popular destination for family gatherings all year round.  The previous Rymill Park kiosk closed years ago but there are plans for a new venue to open in 2025, run by the team behind Hindley Street’s Peter Rabbit Cafe.

A 21-year lease was approved by the Adelaide City Council for the Peter Rabbit team to take over the kiosk, but will now need to be approved by state parliament.  Fingers crossed!
