Minions: The Rise of Gru – In Cinemas 23 June 2022

This June, from the biggest animated franchise in history and global cultural phenomenon, comes the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain, in Minions: The Rise of Gru.

In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

Minions: The Rise of Gru follows films Minions, Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3

Play & Go Review

We were lucky enough to have two of our reviewers go along to see Minions: The Rise of Gru in cinemas. Here’s their take on the movie.

by Carla Caruso:

Calling all Minions fans! The army of lemon Tic Tac-like creatures are back, with their delightfully wicked master, Gru. Minions: The Rise of Gru (PG) – out June 23 – is a prequel to the franchise’s other movies, following Gru as a youngster and his rise to becoming a super-villain.

And this is what is so interesting about the Despicable Me/Minion movies: the script is flipped, and the villain – and his minions – are the lovable protagonists. As the movie goes back to Gru’s childhood, we get to revel in the swinging seventies. The film also has an Asian influence, thanks to a female martial artist, who trains up the Minions, and an epic battle at a Chinese New Year parade.

Expect non-stop action, typical Minion adorableness, and secret, evil lairs galore. The Rise of Gru will best suit school-aged kids and devout Minions fans.

by Brooke Hendry:

The Minions: The Rise of Gru was a hoot and a half – for both the kids and the adults! It’s a fun journey being transported back and seeing how Gru was as a young boy, and his ambition to join the supervillain supergroup, the Vicious 6.

It was clear that Gru was born to be the baddest villain around, but we also loved seeing his softer side and the moments of innocence that comes with still being a child. The Minions were there for Gru every step of the way and showed that no matter how evil or bad you might want to be, there’ll be times when you’ll need a little help from your friends. And the Minions are definitely the friends you want by your side.

The film provided plenty of laughs and lots of action and kept us entertained the entire time.

Bob the Minion was our favourite. We quickly fell in love with him as hard as Minion Otto fell for a pet rock! (You’ll get that once you watch the film). Minion lovers – this is a must-see movie for you!
