Borealis Light Show at Gluttony

See Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka like you’ve never seen it before. Borealis is a captivating experience for all ages.

***Season extended due to popular demand. Adelaide Fringe and Gluttony as a hub will wrap up on Sunday 21 March, however, BOREALIS will continue for an extended season, 24-28 March. Sessions will start from 7.45pm due to the changing sunset time, until 10pm. Colada, the café at the kiosk at Rymill Park Lake that Gluttony has been running during the season will be open for these extra Borealis sessions, and Barbra the bar buggy will also be there to serve patrons.

Borealis by Dan Acher aims to give audiences in urban environments a taste of the Aurora Borealis, also called the Northern Lights, which is a natural phenomenon occurring in the Artic Circle. Auroras are created when solar wind causes disturbances in the magnetosphere creating beautiful colourful and bright light displays in the sky.

We first saw this spectacular light installation on the SA Museum lawns in 2018. It’s travelled the world and we’re so glad to see it back at Adelaide Fringe this year. This time it’s showing at the spacious grounds of Rymill Park in Gluttony, over the beautiful lake, and it’s a perfect spot for viewing.

The smoke and colourful bright lights looming overhead, and dancing in the reflection of the water, is captivating. The spectacle transports you to a faraway place.

The light show is set to a 40 minute soundtrack and the whole effect is quite surreal as the light flickers through the trees and the sky just above the lake. Some may find it slightly eery but it is quite magical to watch.

This is the closest most of us will get to seeing Northern Lights – and the real thing is subject to the weather and clear skies, plus often freezing cold. So enjoy this amazing representation (reliably on every night except Mondays), right here in Adelaide under our Summer skies.

Patrons can enter every 15 minutes and stroll around the lake to watch it from different angles, appreciating the vibrant colours as they intermingle. You can also sit awhile on the grassy banks to enjoy this mesmerising light show over the water in the sky above you.

It’s a must-see this Fringe, and great for kids who can stay up later than 8.30pm.

Please note: it’s very dark around the lake and being right along the water be sure to keep an eye on any small children. There is a path which is stroller and wheelchair friendly.

This is a ticketed event. Tickets are $10 per person or $35 per family (2 adults +2 children, 1 adult + 3 children).

Please note:

Gluttony has changed the site design after the first week to bring Borealis into the main Gluttony hub, operating as its own venue in the hub rather than a separate site. This was for logistical and safety reasons and it also means that a ticket to Borealis will now grant patrons access to the rest of Gluttony Kent Town Side (which Borealis tickets did not before).

They are now advising customers to enter Gluttony via Gate G to access Borealis (off Bartels Road). Gate E (Rundle Rd) will also get patrons into Gluttony Kent Town Side, but Gate G will usually be less busy.
