Review by Sharon Harrington

A magical world of darkness and light

As we enter the theatre, audience members are asked to hand over our pieces of “Dark” to the Dark Collector in exchange for our own special piece of “Light” which is a blue glowing plastic disc. We all sit and wait in the darkness for the show to begin, holding our little blue beacons of light, wondering what on earth is about to happen. “Just wait, you will love it”, my reception-aged child smugly assures me, as she has seen a preview of the show already with her school.

ZOOOM is a wonderfully gentle show, full of eerie, sci-fi inspired electronic sounds, colourful lights and lasers. A young girl alone in her bedroom at nighttime becomes enchanted with a little golden speck of light. She chases the light like a kitten would chase a torch, becomes entangled in it as it becomes a glowing rope, and draws with it creating a luminous landscape inhabited by supernatural friends and foes that come to life and play with her.

My daughters were sitting on the edge of their seats during this show, amazed at the beautiful lights, giggling at the silly parts and feeling joyfully scared at times. The look on their faces reminded me of their first game of Spotlight, or their delight at being under the disco lights at a birthday party.

The use of light is magical. One moment the light is a playful golden star, the next a hazy, wavelike ceiling of purple, then a kaleidoscope of rainbow coloured beams shooting this way and that. The kids loved being encouraged to take part in the show using their glowing blue discs and joining in on what felt like a children’s mini rave dance party halfway through.

Children and parents alike are sure to love this fun, dreamlike show of lights, sound and wonder. Highly recommended!
