Jungle in Willunga – Review

By Jo Parkinson

Are you needing to get your cheeky monkeys out of the house these school holidays? Then let them run wild in the jungle!

The Jungle in Willunga is so much more than a plant nursery. From the shop itself to the Jungle Garden Walk and Fairy Fern Garden, kids and adults alike will love this place. It’s easy to spend an hour or more exploring everything they have on offer.

The Jungle

The first thing you see when you arrive is the ‘jungle’ itself. With the tall palms, ferns and bamboo, you could be mistaken for thinking you have arrived in a tropical destination! I would suggest doing the Jungle Garden Walk first, that way the kids can get their energy out and you can be inspired by the beautiful garden.

Before you begin your walk, stop by the scavenger hunt station just outside the shop, grab a clipboard and texta and get ready to go on a mini safari! There are many life-sized animals hidden amongst the trees, some easy to spot and others a little trickier. The kids will be amazed at the larger animals, it’s not every day you get to see a giant giraffe or gorilla sitting in a garden.

Whilst the kids are enjoying finding and crossing off the animals on their worksheet, adults can enjoy the truly magnificent surrounds of the garden. Dappled light filters through the trees and you can appreciate the amount of work that has gone into creating such a tranquil space. The paths are easy to follow, however, can get slippery when wet so be sure to take care if visiting on a rainy day. The paths lead to different sections of the garden such as the camellia collection (flowering August- September) and oriental garden. Here you will find bamboo, conifers, wisteria and maples from Asia. There are a few bench seats throughout to sit and relax.

Don’t forget to bring some coins with you, the Jungle Garden Walk is a donation of $2 per person, this money goes towards keeping the garden growing for everyone to enjoy.

The Shop

If you like indoor plants, this place is pot plant heaven! The shop has lots of beautiful, healthy plants and a huge range of gorgeous, good quality pots to put them in. There are so many styles and colours available, perfect for treating yourself or making great gifts.

You can also purchase little garden ornaments and accessories.

If you are into gardening or looking to make your garden into a tropical oasis, there is a wide variety of plants to choose from in the outdoor area, both smaller and more established. There is so much greenery with lots of ferns, palms, and a wide variety of bamboo. Friendly staff are happy to assist you if you have any questions into which plants are suited to your needs.

Fairy Fern Garden

There is also another surprise for the kids in this area of the nursery. A cute little Fairy Fern Garden has been created for them to wander through, keeping them busy while you decide what plants to buy. Complete with toadstool table, rainbow, unicorn, and fairies hiding in the plants, this garden is sure to get the imaginations going.

The Jungle in Willunga is a fantastic place to visit with the family. It is unique, value for money and fun for everyone! It is open 7 days a week, 10am-4pm.
