On by Circa l Her Majesty’s Theatre Adelaide | Review

On by Circa, Review

By Jo Parkinson

‘On by Circa’ intrigues, excites and captivates the audience from the very beginning.

Based in Brisbane, Circa is a performance company pioneering a new form of circus. Adelaide was lucky enough to host their latest show, ‘On by Circa’ at Her Majesty’s Theatre.

This unique theatrical production by artistic director Yaron Lifschitz, is a mixture of contemporary dance and acrobatics that will keep you entertained the whole way through.

The eight dancers wear unassuming attire as they move to innovative choreography, set to a rhythmic soundtrack by composer Jethro Woodward. Props are minimal and lighting changes are simple but effective.

Intricate, fast paced group and partner work is impressive, as you witness balancing, rolling, lifting, and running, never knowing what’s coming next. There are moments of calm and stillness in between high energy numbers, giving the performance the perfect balance.

The performers are so precise in their timing and make every movement look effortless. They work beautifully as a team, clearly having a massive amount of trust in one another.

Our favourite part of the show was the incredible display of superhuman strength and agility by the performers. The jaw-dropping stunts have you on the edge of your seat and breaking into applause after each trick. We liked the way partner work wasn’t always male and female, and the how smaller performers supported the larger performers at times, breaking the traditional boundaries we’ve known in the past.

‘On by Circa’ is a must see for theatre lovers who enjoy contemporary dance and acrobatics and is suited to those aged 10 years and older.
