Light Creatures at Adelaide Zoo 2023

Step through the gates of the historic Adelaide Zoo after-dark to experience a mesmerising, immersive tribute to the natural world.

Review by Carla Caruso

Fancy a night at the zoo? Light Creatures is back at the Adelaide Zoo as part of the Illuminate Adelaide festival program.

The experience has grown and evolved since the first one held three years ago. There’s a really fun vibe about it, and it’s definitely a family-friendly highlight of the month-long fest.

Some of the lit-up, interactive installations from past events are back, like the floating, colour-changing jellyfish and the bamboo-snacking pandas, inspired by the zoo’s own Wang Wang and Fu Ni.

But there are also new additions to the night-time trail, such as the majestic golden Falcon, which was a sight to behold as it flapped its wings beneath the moon, and larger-than-life cats, giving a nod to the zoo’s new Sumatran tiger cubs.

You can also glimpse the real tiger mum and cubs sleeping in their lit-up den while there. Though it’s too late and dark to spot many animals, we did also glimpse pelicans and a cassowary in their enclosures.

Before attending the event, we had dinner as we thought there might not be many food and drink options … we were wrong! Virtually, everywhere you turned, there was something on offer to sate you.

Two on-site cafes were open and there was also a pop-up bar, providing delights like mulled wine and glow-in-the-dark ‘swill’ for the kids, a fairy floss vendor, and a desserts stall (hello, cinnamon doughnuts and churros). Needless to say, we had a second dinner and then some!

There was also extra entertainment for the kids, like glow-in-the-dark face-painting. Plus, the nature playground was well-lit for the juniors to play on.

On the way out, you have to exit via the Zoo Shop, which could provide temptation for littlies to take home a souvenir.

All in all, for a wild night of adventure, you can’t do better!

Light Creatures is on at the Adelaide Zoo until Sunday 23 July 2023 (6.30pm and 7.45pm sessions).
