Playford Road Reserve in Newton has a brand new playground with lots of activities and accessibility for all.

Newton has a brand new, huge playground and park tucked away in the backstreets, with accessible features, toddler-friendly equipment, tennis and basketball courts, picnic shelters and toilets.
The centrepiece is a great wooden tower with long accessible ramps, a dual slide and twisty tube slide, and lots of activity boards throughout. There are also paths winding through the park suitable for young riders.
There’s lots of activities for younger kids at the lower sections of the ramps, including xylophone, binoculars, activity boards, small climbing nets and a steering wheel.
Further up into the tower, There are more activity boards, including a great rotating marble maze and a small snakes and ladders board, accessible via a small net.
The smaller dual slide is accessible from the ramp level of the tower, and further up there’s a telescope to take in the view before heading down the twisty tube slide.
Underneath the tower is another steering wheel, and an awesome little memory game board.
Nearby is a small climbing frame, not too big and not too small, just right to challenge kids of all ages.
There’s some challenging stepping stones connecting the soft fall and bark chip areas near here as well.
Over near the adjacent courts – that include a tennis court and full basketball court – is a nice little shaded area with seating and springy animals and a wobbly stepping stone bridge. The bridge is sized just right to be challenging for toddlers, but allows larger kids to use it too.
There is a basket swing, regular swing and toddler swing near here. The basket swing is accessible via the soft fall, but the other two swings are surrounded by bark chips.
Under another shaded area is a large, accessible merry-go-round, with standing bars and a seat, and good grip on the platform.
A third shaded area has some in-ground trampolines, hopscotch and a four-square court.
Paths suitable for little kids to ride on border the playground and lead to a large lawned area suitable for picnics or to kick a ball around. There’s a picnic shelter here as well as one near the carpark.
There are two accessible exe-loo toilets right near the off-street parking.
Things to Consider:
- The playground is not fenced, although it is on a quiet residential street and the playground is set back from the road, and the toilets and picnic shelter form a slight barrier.
- The main playground equipment is not shaded. Because it’s mostly made of wood, it shouldn’t get too hot in summer, but you’ll definitely need hats and sunscreen.
- The trampolines have less “give” than other playground trampolines. This makes them much more robust, and they’ll stand up to bigger kids jumping as hard as they can, but toddlers might need an adult to help add weight to get a good bounce.
- Bring balls for the tennis, basketball and four-square courts, and for kicking around the lawned area.
- The soft fall is a mix of accessible rubber and bark chips. Not all areas of the playground are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, although most can be accessed via the ramps.
