Digital Abyss | Illuminate Adelaide | ILA | 30 Jun – 19 Jul 2026

Digital Abyss is coming to ILA for Illuminate Adelaide 2026.

Discover the secrets of the ocean floor, where technology and nature drift together with Digital Abyss, a spellbinding interactive journey through a magical underwater garden at Adelaide’s home of Immersive Light and Art (ILA).

Inspired by the curious micro wonders of the largely unexplored deep ocean, Digital Abyss mesmerically unfolds across massive LED screens and gallery spaces with an evolving collage of glowing lightworks, AI plankton projections, and 3D sculptures Watch as the curved interactive screens respond to your presence, where shadows ripple, forms emerge, and unseen worlds grow from data algorithms derived from the living world.

The centrepiece of Digital Abyss is Amphibolis (Evolution), a large-scale interactive installation projected across ILA’s curved LED screens which spans three metres high by 24 metres wide. Experiencing this work is like descending into a living, breathing underwater ecosystem; nothing remains static as visitor movement fills the marine garden with life – imaginary seaweed and algae forms gently shifting, bending and wavering from side to side.

For over 45 years, Miguel has been a pioneer in the field of immersive digital experiences and is Illuminate Adelaide’s 2026 Luminary Artist-in-Residence. Chevalier has also created two installations for this year’s free City Lights display – Pixel Waves (Bonython Hall) and The Origin of the World (Government House).

Dates: 30 June – 19 July
Times: Daily, 10am until 8pm (8:30pm on Fridays & Saturdays)
Tickets: $22-$25
