Sea of Light | Patch Theatre | Review

We stepped inside a magical world, under the sea and painted pictures with lights at Burnside Village!
Review by Angelica-Hazel Toutounji
If you are looking for an excuse to visit the beautiful Burnside Village Shopping Centre and a fun school holiday activity that everyone will love, Sea of Light is just what you are after. Located on level 2, next to the Health and Wellness precinct, Sea of Light is an interactive installation created by the amazing team at Patch Theatre.

Making our way towards the event, we had no idea what to expect but the kids instantly got excited seeing the bright blue draping and Sea of Light signs. We lined up, took our shoes off and made our way inside. Once inside children are given a little light and free rein of the space to discover, play and design their own masterpiece.

The little light supplied is actually a UV torch and the kids are able to use it to create their own voyage across the sea, painting glowing trails, outlining sea themed objects and pushing around a ship to reveal a shimmering path. It’s basically thirty minutes of pure joy and imaginative play for young and old with an ocean theme. We visited with a five, six, eight-year-old and a baby and we all absolutely loved the experience.

Apart from the ocean theme, what was really cool about this activity is how interactive it was. There was no set structure of how to play or pathway to take, you go in, use your imagination and let yourself create what you like with your kids. My kids enjoyed tracing each other with the light, pushing around the ship and writing their names with the lights. We also found half an hour was a perfect amount of time to capture their attention and being located in Burnside Village right next to toilets, change facilities and multiple eateries made the whole afternoon fun and easy.

We paired our visit with a stop at Momoto, a casual Japanese restaurant with a sushi train that runs through it. We also found it’s good to do the experience and then go for a bite to eat, or a sweet treat as you are given a little flyer with some specials when you sign into Sea of Light, which makes it even more appealing and affordable.

All in all we loved our visit to Sea of Light and enjoyed spending the afternoon at Burnside Village Shopping Centre. It was light hearted, fun and a great family friendly activity for the whole family. We will also be keeping an eye out for future Patch Theatre events, as they are always a winner!
