The Museum’s popular School Holiday Program offers unique opportunities for children to connect with and be excited by science and culture; to be involved in something out of the ordinary that they might not get to experience at home or school. The theme for the Spring 2014 holidays is Night Creatures: In Your Backyard. When the sun goes down there are many different animals just waking up!
Come and explore night creatures found in your backyard to uncover what they are. How do they see? What happens to the day time animals ? See the night in a whole new light.

Nocturnal animals prefer to come out during the night. Some nocturnal animals can be seen during the day; others spend the whole day resting or sleeping. Discover these animals with our scientist and learn about some of the adaptations these creatures have to survive and thrive in the dark.
Owl Fossil Workshops
- 30 September & 1 October, 11am-12.30pm
- Meet in Main Foyer, Ground Floor

Interested in bones? Would you like to know what a tibia is? Come along to this workshop and pick apart Barn Owl pellets to discover how bones in the fur-wrapped pellets may be used to identify the prey species. Note: These pellets have been regurgitated (coughed-up) from the owl’s stomach and do not come out of the ‘back end’.

Have a hands-on experience with real nocturnal animals such as the barn owl, bandicoot, bearded dragon, sleepy lizard, and take a closer look at a scorpion or a bird-eating spider.

Enjoy an interactive, chill-out space for kids and families. Play with shadow puppets, play hide and seek to find animals hiding in the backyard, and read books about life in the dark.
Torchlight Tours: Secrets of the Shadows

Join singing palaeontologist Professor Flint on a journey into the shadows. This is an expedition into the dark of the night where a very different group of animals live compared to those we see during the day. These torchlight tours provide a unique opportunity to see the Museum in a very different light, and to answer the age-old question whether or not things really do come to life when the doors are locked, and the lights are turned down.
