Barossa Valley Chocolate Company | Tanunda | Review

Barossa Valley Chocolate Company – Review

The Barossa Valley Chocolate Company is the newest tourist attraction to call this famous wine region home, located just outside of Tanunda.

From the moment you walk through the doors and view the mesmerising chocolate ‘waterfall’ your senses will be in overdrive, taking in the delicious smells, brightly coloured boxes of chocolates and the sights and sounds of a working production line.  With a range of more than 250 products, there is a chocolate to suit everyone.  Children will love looking through the glass windows of the factory and watching the chocolatiers in action.  The retail space is bright and colourful, offering a single mouth watering chocolate through to enormous Easter eggs the size of a football.  The novelty collections range from chocolate high heel shoes and footy boots to golf balls and clowns, plus there are classic favourites such as freckles and chocolate coated licorice.

The alphabet cabinet is a fabulous concept – and as tempting as it was to spell out an entire name in chocolate, an initial was still exciting to take home.  A great gift idea too.  There are lots of Australian souvenir chocolates – like Benni the Koala, perfect for international visitors.  The boxes of small chocolate numbers and letters were a hit too.

Chocolate & Wine – what’s not to love? You’ll have an entirely new appreciation for both with the specially curated chocolate and wine pairing experience in the cellar door.  The self guided tour with five different styles of chocolate – white, ruby, milk and two different dark flavours is offered with five different Vintage Road wines.  The new ruby chocolate is a must try, a variety that was only discovered 13 years ago that has only been available in Australia since September 2018.

Benni’s Cafe is a family friendly space with views out to the water and vineyards, offering a great range of meals and drinks including a $10 juniors menu. Food is seasonal, locally sourced and can be enjoyed inside or out, with an indoor stone fireplace for the cooler seasons and a spacious deck perfect for warm days. The grass was still young and off limits at the time of our review, but soon it will be a welcoming area to enjoy outside, with plans to host special events along with some outdoor games to entertain the kids.

The Cellar Door features high tables and stools and is the perfect spot to share some tapas and taste the handcrafted Vintage Road selection of wines.  Experiences include daily tastings, various wine flights and vineyard tours.  The Cellar Door’s adjoining space will be used for events and activities such as chocolate making classes and different workshops, formal dinners and children’s birthday parties.

An icecreamery serving freshly made gelato with flavours such as bubblegum and soft caramel will end your meal on a high.  If you have an ice cream fan in the family be warned – the Ice Creamery is located at the entrance, so a little bribery to wait until after lunch may be required!

It was quite overcast on the day of our visit, but the venue was warm and welcoming.  It would be even more impressive out on the deck on a warm sunny day, but just as inviting around the fire on a cool winter afternoon.

A note regarding the water – the area is fenced, however, could easily be accessed or climbed as it has wide spaced horizontal wires, so close supervision will be essential with young children when outside on the lawn (as at April 2019).

There is a large car park with free parking as well as parking along the road.  Entry is free and samples are offered on featured flavours in both the chocolate shop and ice creamery for tasting. The cellar door also offers a list of complimentary offerings.

The Barossa Chocolate Company is fun for all and is a must visit for locals, city dwellers and tourists.  A fabulous addition to the Barossa Valley, there really is something for everyone.
