BECKHAM | Netflix Docuseries | Review

BECKHAM is a 4 part biographical docuseries on Netflix that traces David’s rise from his humble beginnings in east London to international sports superstar. David played professionally for the very best teams: 11 years for Manchester United, then on to Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris St.-Germain.

It’s a fascinating documentary with an in depth look into the life of David Beckham – how and why he became one of the best soccer/football players in the world, and one of the most famous superstars worldwide. It shows his wife Victoria, former Spice Girl band member ‘Posh Spice’ in a different light too.

For soccer fans it includes commentary from some huge soccer stars.  Beckham’s dedication, talent, perseverance, loyalty, and his “I don’t give up” attitude, is really inspiring. His story is a lesson in resilience. His family grounding and upbringing especially helped him overcome major challenges, like when the whole of England was hating on him.

One of the things that I noticed was that he mentions a few times how he would look for his parents in the stands just before the beginning of a game. Seeing his Mum and Dad, or just knowing they were there, watching him in the stadiums, made him feel safe. I feel it’s a great reminder to parents who are there at games and comps, watching on, that it means a lot, being the safe harbour for your kids – that no matter what happens, you love them and will be there for them. It doesn’t matter whether you’re watching your child play in the World Cup or the Under 10s Grade 5, the dance concert or chess comp, win or lose.

If you haven’t seen this series yet and wondering if it’s suitable for kids, there is some swearing, but apart from that, it’s fine for older kids. It’s an especially inspiring story for young soccer fans but is entertaining for anyone. You don’t need to be into soccer to appreciate and enjoy this documentary.
