Biscuit Decorating for Kids | Ideas & Inspiration

Biscuit decorating – inspiration and ideas for creative do-it-yourself biscuits at home.

Rainy days, hot days or just lazy days at home and looking for something fun and creative to make with the kids?  Give biscuit decorating a go and not only have fun making them, but you’ll get to enjoy the end result too!

Kids love to get messy and this activity will let them do just that, as well as show off their creative side.  To save time and avoid baking you can use any shop bought biscuits, such as the Arnott’s plain range including Milk Arrowroot, Marie Plain, Milk Coffee, Yo-Yo or Shredded Wheatmeal Plain.  Choose the shape in relation to what you want to make – rectangular biscuits for LEGO biscuits or robots, round or oval biscuits for faces or animals.

Your local supermarket should have everything you need and most stock a good selection of different toppings and decorations.  There’s a great range of ‘mini’ products too such as cookies and marshmallows and ready made candy eyes.

Have your decorations organised before you begin icing so you are ready to start decorating before the icing sets.

The main ingredients you will need include:

  • biscuits
  • icing sugar
  • food colouring
  • edible toppings – sprinkles, chocolates, lollies, silver balls etc

Equipment:

  • bowls (small – one each for different coloured icing)
  • spoons
  • plate or tray
  • mini spatula / butter knife (for spreading icing)
  • food scissors /sharp knife (for cutting lollies)
  • apron or old t-shirt (food colouring can stain!)
