City Lights Trail | Illuminate Adelaide 2026 | Tips and Tricks – get the most out of the City Lights Installations along North Terrace and Rymill Park
Article by Claire Davill
City Lights is a must see during the Illuminate Adelaide festival, and this year’s installations are interactive, fun, and spectacular – and they’re all free to see.
The city lights are on from 5:30pm every night until 19 July. This year, the installations are spread along North Terrace from Government House to Lot Fourteen, with extra installations in Rymill Park and on Rundle Street.

Tips for Exploring the Trail:
- Consider catching a bus into the city to reduce parking costs.
- We suggest starting at Government House, walking along North Terrace, then cutting across East Terrace to Rymill Park, and then up Rundle Street.
- Check the Illuminate Adelaide guide and map to see which installations you most want to see, and target those if the distance is too far for little legs.
- Our favourite installations this year were:
Dream Herd (Corner of North Terrace and Frome Road)

CYGNUS (Rymill Park Lake)

Piano Walk (In front of the State Library)

Pixel Waves (Bonython Hall at Adelaide University)

Whispering Mountains (In front of the SA Museum)

- Consider catching the tram along North Terrace from the Botanic stop back towards Government House if you want to take a one-way walk.
- Don’t miss the installations that are slightly tucked away – Bob the Railway Dog near the State Library Entrance, Rarrirarri behind the Art Gallery, and Pixel Waves inside Bonython Hall.
- The Rymill Park lights make a nice little loop walk if you don’t want to go far. You’ll walk under the River of Lights, spot the inflatable Nocturnal animals, explore the Neon Dog Park, and watch glowing swans zoom around Rymill lake at CYGNUS. CYGNUS is particularly spectacular to witness.
- Rundle Street is closed to traffic on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 4:30pm during Illuminate Adelaide. The buildings along the street are lit up, there are fireplaces along the route, and several installations of Optik, and a spinning looking glass that’s highly interactive. This is also where you can catch the roving performances (see details below).
- If you are visiting on the weekend, try to time your visit to catch the roving performances of Mirror Me and Birdmen. These performances are lots of fun, and the Birdmen are huge!

Things to Consider:
- It can be cold; rug up and wear comfortable walking shoes.
- There may be a queue for some of the more interactive installations, but you should never have to wait too long to have a go.
- The Birdmen are huge and impressive, but might be a bit scary for little kids.

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:
- There are multiple pit stops for Illuminate Adelaide at the Art Gallery, State Library, Adelaide University, Lot Fourteen and Rymill Kiosk, serving drinks, hot food and snacks. Fairy floss, popcorn and toffee apples are available at the State Library Pit Stop.
- There are multiple cafes and eateries along Rundle Street, and when the road is closed, many places have additional seating along the road.
Location:
North Terrace (from Government House to Lot Fourteen)
Rymill Park
