Commissary – Breakfast and Lunch in the Queen Vic Building, Rose Park

Review by Susannah Marks

I’d been hearing rumours about a cafe that opened up in the Queen Vic building next to Victoria Park. This morning with a few moments to spare, and with a need for my caffeine fix, I decided to pay Commissary a visit.

Commissary sits right on the edge of Victoria Park so is an ideal spot for those of us who like to grab a quick coffee on the go before heading into the Victoria Park Loop for a walk or a bike ride. It’s just next to the traffic lights at the intersection of Fullarton Road and Grant Avenue, and there is street parking nearby.

The fit-out at Commissary is sleek and modern with wooden floors and tables and wire-frame chairs. You can sit inside or outside and enjoy views of Victoria Park. We were greeted with a very warm welcome from the staff who rustled up a table with a highchair for us, and took us through their breakfast menu and mouthwatering array of cabinet food.

It being a cold dreary Adelaide morning it seemed only right that my coffee should come with a salted caramel protein ball to keep it company and to liven things up. My nine year old companion was drawn to the entire contents of the cabinet but eventually settled on the lemon meringue.

Our food and coffee arrived promptly. Commissary’s coffee was among the best coffees I’ve had in Adelaide. The lemon meringue was gooey and divine, and the salted caramel ball was equally good.

Commissary’s breakfast and lunch menus

Commissary serve breakfast all day from 7am. My nine year old companion was keen to eat his way through the whole of Commissary’s breakfast menu but sadly we didn’t have time.

Commissary’s breakfast menu looks pretty fabulous though with a variety of the usual breakfast staples like freshly squeezed juices, free range eggs, smashed avocado, waffles, bagels, muesli and a smoothie bowl. They also have some more unusual offerings like scrambled meat and eggs with pickled turnip, labneh and za’arta toast; sautéed greens; or poached egg with slow roasted pumpkin, kale, goat cheese and pesto.

Commissary also have a lunch menu which consists of salads, bites and plates. Think dukkah encrusted lamb on mixed greens with feta, lentils, cherry tomato and pomegranate. Yum! I am also salivating at the thought of their calamari with Himalayan salt and pepper and mixed greens.

Good news if you’re vegan or gluten-free: Commissary also do several gluten-free or vegan options.

Commissary: the verdict

The coffee was superb and we barely scratched the surface of their menu so we’ll be back. If you’re off for a walk in Victoria Park then I thoroughly recommend you pop into Commissary to grab a quick coffee and something for the road. If you don’t have the kind of children who are happy to sit quietly while you tuck into their delicious menu, then there’s always the option of sitting outside.
