Make your own Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups at Home | Recipe

Easy Recipe for Kids to make your own Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups at Home.

By Claire Davill

Dubai chocolate is everywhere at the moment, with everyone going nuts over pistachio-flavoured food.

Dubai chocolate, a delicious combination of pistachio cream and kataifi pastry wrapped in chocolate, is the standout. Variations of this dish are popping up everywhere, but it can often be an expensive treat. However, you can make it at home for far less, and it makes a great cooking activity for the kids!

We were inspired to try making Dubai chocolate strawberry cups at home by Oh So Busy Mum – and we’ve got some tips on where to find the ingredients in Adelaide, and how to make these treats with kids.

Ingredients

You’ll need the following ingredients to make your cups. These ingredients yielded four very generous serves, using only half of the pastry, most of the pistachio cream and a tiny amount of the cotton candy.

  • Kataifi pastry – this is fine, “string” pastry and the trickiest ingredient to find, as it’s very popular at the moment. We bought Antoniou brand chilled Kataifi, which is available in most Foodland and Drakes supermarkets. Other places you might be able to find the pastry include continental shops, and larger fruit and vegetable shops. A bag of pastry cost us $6.90.
  • Pistachio cream – found in most major supermarkets in the jams and spreads section, this popular product is sometimes sold out. We bought Pistachio Papi brand from Woolworths for $12.
  • Chocolate – any chocolate for melting will do, either block chocolate or chocolate melts. We used a block of Cadbury chocolate that was on special for $4.
  • Strawberries – these provide a nice contrast to the rich, creamy chocolate and pistachio. We bought one punnet for $4.
  • Butter – for frying the Kataifi
  • Optional Extra – Turkish Cotton Candy or Pişmaniye (pistachio flavour). We used this to garnish our cups. Turkish cotton candy has a distinct texture, different to fairy floss, and is made with spun sugar, flour and butter. You can find it at specialty supermarkets that stock middle eastern products. We purchased ours from Salam Supermarket in Felixstow for $4.

How to Make Your Cups

  1. Cut the Kataifi pastry. Cut the pastry into sections, about 2-3cm long. This can be a bit tricky because the lump of pastry is quite hard to cut. We suggest that adults cut the pastry instead of kids. Tease apart the pastry as much as possible, this makes it easier to evenly fry. This is a fun task for little kids.

2. Fry the pastry in a fry pan with butter. We found about two tablespoons of butter was sufficient for half of the packet of pastry. Gently stir the pastry in the pan on medium heat, making sure the butter coats all the pastry strands. We found the pastry browns quite quickly, so keep the pastry moving in the pan to ensure it doesn’t burn. Once the pastry is light brown and crispy, transfer to a bowl.

3. Mix in pistachio cream. Add as much pistachio cream as needed to coat the pastry. We found about 3 tablespoons was sufficient, about three quarters of our jar of pistachio cream. The cream can be quite stiff and hard to mix at first, so it may help for an adult to start the mixing until its easier to stir.

4. Cut strawberries. This is another task that’s great for little kids. You don’t need a sharp knife to slice strawberries (a butter knife is fine), and they don’t need to be perfectly sliced. We recommend quartering the strawberries.

5. Melt the chocolate. This can be done over a saucepan of water on the stove, or by microwaving. Place chocolate in a heat proof bowl and melt in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time. Be careful as it will get very hot!

6. Assemble your cups. Layer chocolate, pistachio pastry mix, and strawberries to your liking. Top with a few strands of Turkish Cotton Candy.
