Giant Pigeon Sculpture in Rundle Mall
A tribute to the feathery urban dwellers that live — and scavenge — in the city of Adelaide has been unveiled by the City of Adelaide – a larger than life mirrored, stainless-steel geometric sculpture named ‘Pigeon’.
You can’t walk along Rundle Mall without noticing that pigeons are everywhere, flitting past busy shoppers and pecking at crumbs left behind by diners. Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said the giant pigeon sculpture by South Australian artist Paul Sloan celebrated the birds in a quirky and intriguing way.
“This exciting piece of public art will build on the existing legacy of public art across the city and will add to Adelaide’s reputation as a place of culture, creativity and innovation. I actually think these things are meant to be playful, and they are meant to be challenging sometimes, and fun. I think it will be a piece of artwork that will attract a lot of opinions. I really look forward to people’s reaction to it.”
Artist Paul Sloan said he wanted to raise the status of the “humble pigeon” through his $174,000 sculpture, which stands more than 2 metres high.
“I see pigeons as proud flaneurs, promenading through our leisure and retail precincts. They are the quiet witnesses of our day-to-day activities in the city, our observers from day through to night.” he said.
Rundle Mall Management Authority General Manager Johanna Williams said Pigeon would be a destination in itself.
“The retail sector is ever-changing and providing enjoyable experiences both in and out of store is key to attracting visitors and encouraging them to stay, especially given the recent impacts of the COVID- 19 pandemic on traders,” she said.
You can find Pigeon next to the Nespresso store at the Gawler Place entrance to Rundle Mall, about 100 metres from the four bronze pigs.
