Gratitude Jar – Mindfulness Activity for Kids

This gratitude jar is a great mindfulness activity to get kids practising gratitude daily. It’s easy to get caught up in feeling like we’ve not got enough, instead of focusing on what we do have and what we’re thankful for. Take a look at these simple instructions and printable gratitude cards!

What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness can help decrease anxiety and increase happiness – and who wouldn’t want that?! Just like adults, kids will also experience daily stressors as they overcome life’s hurdles and challenges. Having a toolbox of mindfulness practices that they can refer back to in difficult moments will help kids develop necessary skills, including increased compassion, focus, curiosity and empathy.

What can I write on my gratitude cards?
When writing your gratitude cards, you can write about absolutely anything that brings you joy. It can be as simple as the warmth of the sun or the softness of your cat’s fur! You might also like to write about something you’re excited about, like the upcoming school holidays or a sleepover at your friend’s house.

Materials

  • Jar
  • Ribbon
  • Printable gratitude cards and label (see below)
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors

Steps

  1. Firstly, gather your materials. You’ll need an empty jar (you could use a pasta sauce jar), a pair of scissors, glue stick, length of ribbon, pencil, and Babysits printable label and gratitude cards (see above for printout).
  2. Cut out your label and cards, and add glue to the ‘Gratitude Jar’ label.
  3. Position the label in the centre of your jar.
  4. Cut a length of ribbon and tie a bow around the neck of the jar.
  5. Use the gratitude cards to write down something that you’re grateful for.
  6. Add the card to your jar!

It’s never too early to start practising mindfulness! Encouraging kids to do simple and fun mindfulness exercises from an early age can help to form a positive foundation as they learn new skills.
