Great ideas to help your kids spend time away from the screen

It’s safe to say that many of us find the allure of a ‘screen’ all too easy to resist and these days we all need access to technology for work, school and even sporting clubs! As with anything, moderation is the key and we have some great ideas to help you peel the kids away from the screens and get into playing and having fun.

You can also join the Kinderling Kids Radio Screen-Free Challenge. Kinderling are challenging families to unplug and play – there is even a chance to win a $5000 family holiday! Find out more here.

Outdoor Fun

When the weather is great, there’s no better place to be than outdoors. Here’s a few ideas.

Make a flower picture

Make a flower picture – get the kids to hunt around the garden (you’d be surprised what they’ll find) for cute leaves, seed pods and flowers which they can make into a cute flower picture on the ground. This is a great way to get kids to work together on a little creative project and you’ll find it brings out the best in them.

Make giant bubbles

We love this one. It is so easy – you just have to play around with the mixture to get it right. See our easy recipe here.

Make like a Ninja warrior and create an obstacle course

Maybe you have a cubby house, balls, trampoline, mud, grass, stepping stones or steps at your place. Whatever you have handy, turn your backyard into an obstacle course and get fit at the same time! Simply map out a path which involves climbing, running jumping, running around posts or clotheslines, crawling, sliding, swinging, shooting hoops and do it to the best of your ability and then get the kids to follow. The kids will have a blast, burn off some energy and you will also have met some of your daily exercise requirements!

Let the kids get messy with soap slime

Making soap slime is a lot of fun and a great sensory activity for kids. This soap slime is made with soap flakes, so at least it’s a clean messy play activity! Get the recipe here.

Make Gloop

What could be more sensory fun than this! Get the recipe here.

Music

Do a dance-off in the lounge-room with the kids. It burns off a surprising amount of energy and it’s also lots of fun. We love listening to Dance-Off on the Kinderling Kids Radio App as it’s a great mix of music that even adults and older kids can enjoy!

Indoor Fun

Make an indoor cubby.

Kids love doing this! Grab all the blankets, cushions and pillows you can (provided you are happy using them!) and find a cosy corner in the house, ideally next to a stable bookcase or something you can peg blankets onto. Let the kids arrange it using whatever they can find, then once you’ve finished, you can all have a nap together – perfect!

Board Games

It may seem obvious, but board games are the perfect way to spend time with kids inside, particularly as they get older and can play more challenging games. Some of our favourites include: Othello, Monopoly, Uno and Scrabble. Remember there are lots of junior versions of regular board games for the younger kids.

Make salt dough

This is great for a rainy day activity and you can use the recipe for making christmas ornaments and jewellery. See the recipe here.
