Family Friendly Dining at Gunbae Korean in Adelaide

Looking for a quick, tasty, and family-friendly meal in the city’s east end? Our favourite spot is Gunbae!

Review by Claire Davill

Gunbae is a casual Korean restaurant, located down Union Street, just off Rundle Street. It’s open for lunch and dinner, and it’s become our go-to for fast, tasty food with something for everyone. Even picky eaters will find something they love here.

The menu is simple, with a focus on fried chicken – crunchy and perfectly cooked, with a variety of sauces. The other dishes are served tapas-style, share plates so everyone gets to pick something they like, and kids can make their own plate. There are set menu/feed me options if you can’t decide, but you really can’t go wrong, we’ve never encountered a dish we didn’t like.

Items that are particularly kid-friendly are the Joomukbap (seasoned rice balls), Mandoo (vegetable dumplings) and of course, fried chicken! They also do perfect hot chips here, served with tomato sauce (for the kids) or green chilli mayonnaise (for the adults).

The yuza salad is also a delicious, fresh option, with  lettuce, tomato, feta cheese, almonds and a citrus dressing.

Fried chicken options include half bird, whole bird and boneless, and sauces include sticky soy (a particular favourite of the youngest member of our family), soy and garlic and a sweet/spicy sauce. All fried chicken comes with individual serves of citrusy slaw and pickled radishes, both are delicious.

For those that like a slightly spicier option, the Kimchi Jeon (fried kimchi pancake) is also a winner.

The restaurant has an extensive drinks menu, with Korean beers to try, and house-made soju (rice wine) in different flavours. We tried the Yakult soju, which is a really unique and refreshing drink – for the adults of course!

For kids, Korean soft drink brand Bong Bong is available in grape, peach, and nashi pear flavours. The peach and grape flavours come with chunks of fruit in them and are just perfect for a treat.

Gunbae’s location down a side street means it’s nice and quiet, and the casual setting and friendly service is perfect for families. Meals are fast to come out – perfect for kids who don’t want to wait when hungry.

There are tables outside for when the weather is nice, and tables and booths inside. The owner and staff are super friendly, and, if you dine more than a couple of times, you’ll be recognised – and welcomed with a chat!
