Hendrie Street Reserve Inclusive Playground
In a South Australian first, a new inclusive playground was designed to cater for all ages and abilities and includes elements for a broad range of disabilities. The playground is situated at Hendrie Street Reserve in Park Holme (just behind the Marion Outdoor Swimming Centre) and is a place where children of all abilities can play side-by-side.
Consideration has been given to children who may have mobility issues, vision/hearing impairments and spectrum disorders such as Autism.
The park features wheelchair access to the first level of the main structure, swings, slides, a carousel, bike track, sand and water play, fruit trees and accessible toilets.
The playground features include:
- a wheelchair accessible carousel
- swings
- a hill slide
- a nature play creek
- play tables
- an accessible cubby house
- water play areas
- BBQs and picnic shelters
- toilets with disabled access and baby change facilities
- the site is fenced and protected by shade sails
This is an off-leash park where dogs can exercise off-leash, except within 5 metres of a playground, at a wetland or when organised sport is being played.
This inclusive playspace, the first of its kind in SA, has been built as a collaboration by The Touched by Olivia Foundation, the City of Marion, the South Australian Government and the community.
The reserve also features a large grassed area, 3 on 3 basketball and is adjacent to the Marion Outdoor Pool and historic Patritti vineyards.
