Horseshoe Bay Reserve Playground | Port Elliot | Review

An updated playground located at a family favourite beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Review by Adaire Prosser

Horseshoe Bay in Port Elliot is a favourite beach for families on the Southern Coast. Located 80km from Adelaide, it is the perfect destination for a day trip.

The playground is located on the southwestern corner of the bay, near the Surf Lifesavers club and underwent an upgrade in 2022. It has a lot of toddler friendly options, and kids of all ages will find something to enjoy.

You will find three slides of different heights, and a variety of climbing options. The steps on the ladder are nice and wide which is perfect for toddlers learning to climb. The bridge to the larger slide is also a lot of fun for toddlers to learn how to shift their weight with the incline.

There are plenty of interactive parts, including a clock, windows to peak out of and small trumpets that make fun noises. A fun xylophone made from pipes is located underneath the larger slide.

Nearby, there is another slide, climbing rope and turnstile located a few meters away that will suit older kids. The incline to get to this slide is steeper and the rope will challenge climbing skills and strength. The old climbing tree has been mostly removed, but the trunk remains which is a favourite to balance along and climb up.

There is plenty of grass if you want to bring a picnic rug, or there are shelters within easy distance from the play equipment. These can get busy on weekends especially in summer with lots of beachgoers. There is a new sheltered solar charging station with USB ports.

The Flying Fish café is adjacent to the playground. They offer dine in and take away options – you can order from the counter or via the website/QR code.

While you are here, there is also a walk along the coast of Port Elliot suitable for families – read our review here

Things to Consider:

  • The playground is not shaded, so make sure you bring hats and sunscreen on high UV days.
  • There is no fence, so be prepared to explore the beach (and bring a change of clothes for those water lovers!).
  • Toilets are a short walk away near the carpark.
  • Suggest packing a picnic rug on busy days/ school holidays as the limited shelters are very popular.

Our favourite nearby coffee spots/cafes:

  • Flying Fish Café – dine in or takeaway
  • Port Elliot Bakery
  • Cockles Café

Location:

The playground is located on the foreshore of Horseshoe Bay – 30 Basham Parade, Port Elliot, South Australia
