A fun-filled acrobatic exploration of emotions & imagination

by Sharon Harrington

Beloved children’s theatre specialists, Patch Theatre, have collaborated with renowned circus company, Gravity & Other Myths, to create an acrobatic exploration of our personalities, emotions and all the things we could be.

This gorgeous production creates an immersive experience right from the entrance to the theatre. Neon rainbow lights illuminate the darkened playhouse and light up bright clothing. Sci-fi inspired sounds create the sense that we are about to embark on a mission into outer space.

As the show begins, we meet our four heroes, who are bathed in a glow of coloured light and zoomed into space. We get to know them through a series of fun dance moves, somersaults, and stories about their emotions and imagination.

Coloured light, physical theatre and perfectly timed sounds are cleverly used to demonstrate how the characters work their way through emotions such as anxiety, feeling tongue-tied and loneliness. After emotions are explored, the characters explore all the things they could be, like a unicorn, or a bird or anything they can imagine!

Children in the audience loved this show for the crazy somersaults, rainbow waves of light, and the opportunity to become a part of the show through charades and helping characters to feel better when they are sad. They also loved the silly fart and vomit sounds which were timed perfectly with flickering lights. My little four year old declared this show to be “amazing!”

I Wish… is a visually stunning spectacle of lights, circus feats and self-exploration.  Check it out at the Adelaide Festival Centre until 28 August 2021.
