Based on the classic children’s book by Alison Lester, Imagine LIVE is a feast for the eyes and ears that children and grownups alike will adore.
By Lisa Bachmayer
This enchanting interactive musical is a celebration of imagination, combining live music, song and sound effects with audience interaction, puppetry and technology to bring its captivated audience on a journey through the natural world.
There’s always an element of uncertainty when a beloved book is turned into a film, TV show or – in this case – theatre show. Will it ruin the story or be a lack-lustre copy?
Imagine LIVE is none of these; it pays tribute to Alison Lester’s delightful picture book while creating its own story based on Imagine’s themes of creativity, friendship and discovery.
Instead of simply retelling the story, it captures the magical experience of reading the book itself, breathing life into the themes and landscapes in the original story.
As well as enchanting live performance, fabulous use of props and the magic of violinist and composer Nate Gilkes live on stage, director and writer Joylon James weaves in a lovely cross-generational theme through video calls between a young girl and her grandmother.
Given this book was a gift to our oldest daughter before she was born from her grandmother almost seven years ago, this stage show hit all the right notes for us.
It’s almost impossible to find something that keeps both our two and six year old girls happy, let alone their parents, but this one successfully entertained and enchanted all of us.
The performers at our show, Aubrey Flood, Adeline Hunter and Abe Geyer, captured the imaginations and senses of their entire audience at the Dunstan Playhouse.
James, Gilkes and their performers do justice to the book by creating their own magic and story, inspired by creativity, exploration, connection and – of course – imagination.
By combining captivating stage elements with much-loved themes from the book, Imagine LIVE appeals to audience members of all ages, from the very young to the very old.
And we still love the book, even more than ever.
