Horse Drawn Tram at Victor Harbor – Step Back In Time
Victor Harbor’s Historic Horse Drawn Tram is a “South Australian icon and a living, breathing piece of industrial heritage!”
Located at Encounter Bay in the seaside town of Victor Harbor, this famous tram’s history dates back 150 years. Over 150,000 passengers climb aboard and enjoy the authentic journey across to Granite Island every year.
The tram takes passengers on the 600m wooden causeway across to Granite Island and back again. You can choose to take the tram one way and walk back, or buy a return ticket. The rhythmic clippity clop of the horse’s hooves and the rumble of the tram makes for a very relaxing journey. There is a beautiful view of the bay, the bluff and the island from the top of the tram especially, but on a windy day it may pay to sit inside!
Tickets are available from the Tram driver.
EDITORS NOTE:
Back On Track! June 2019 | Temporary repairs to the Granite Island Causeway have been completed, so the horse tram service is back in operation. Shorter trips across to Granite Island and back to the mainland are available daily from 10.40am. Major repairs and restoration are in the planning stages.
Granite Island Victor Harbor
There’s plenty to see and do once you get to Granite Island, as you can read about here. The tram staff are friendly and happy to answer curious questions from little ones. There are 7 handsome Clydesdale horses that share the load of pulling the trams each week. They are ridden to and from work daily for 3 shifts a week, a total of 5 trips each shift. That’s 9 hours work a week. A carrot or two well deserved.
