Princess Margaret Playground |  Byron Rd & Canterbury Tce, Black Forest

by Catherine Leo

If your child is like mine and holds everyday things like trains, the postie, or a digger at work in high esteem then they will love coming to the Princess Margaret playground in Black Forest. Located next to railway tracks, youโ€™ll have the added bonus of regular commuter trains zooming past which are sure to make every toddler stop and stare in amazement!

Besides the trains, there is a lot of fun equipment on offer in this fully fenced, suburban playground as well as plenty of open space for kicking a ball or laying down the picnic rug.

Toilets, a bbq and several bench seats make it a popular place for parties and gatherings.

Our visit occurred not long after a heatwave so we noted the fact that only around half of the equipment was under shade, making some items like the slippery dip and silver merry-go-round completely out of bounds when it is hot. This latter piece of equipment is also quite high off the ground so not ideal for toddlers.

Other areas are very shaded and our mini reviewers loved the scramble net, the foursome seasaw and moving through the climbing rings. They also enjoyed the bridge, although take care to help them through the gap from the platform onto the bridge itself โ€“ a little further than weโ€™ve seen elsewhere and it required some hand-holding for safety. Once on it though, they navigated it fine.

The pretend shop was a hit too, providing plenty of imaginative play options. However if you get tired of drinking pretend coffees you donโ€™t have to travel far to find 2 cafes in the neighbourhood on East Avenue (Sublime Cafรฉ โ€“ 5 stars for their Hazelnut frappe! – and Carnevale Coffee Roasters).

Our little ones also loved the drinking fountain at their height and the fantastic climbing platform in the sandpit with jugs to hoist up, and pipes to tip sand through.

Overall a very nice playground, especially for little ones (though older kids could be entertained with their own sports equipment or on the larger equipment) but on a hot day there are a few areas to steer clear from or you might burn your butt! Little train lovers will be overjoyed too by its proximity to the railway tracks.
