Sticks Stones Broken Bones at the Stirling Fringe 2018| Review

Sticks Stones Broken Bones is just one of 38 shows that have been hand-picked to make an appearance at the 2018 Stirling Fringe.

Sticks Stones Broken Bones features one performer, local Hew Parham, whose slightly naughty, slightly mad-professor type character hobbles together ordinary everyday objects like sticky-tape, bits of fluff, foam and clothes to create slightly surreal, playful shadow-puppet characters and stories.

The show begins with Parham’s character grabbing (with permission) a shoe from one of the adult audience members and transforming it into a shoe-phone then a nose-picker (to the delight of lots of kids). Parham then engages the younger audience members by handing out strips of sticky tape and from there the audience watches in wonder as the objects are brought together to create a new story without words.

Without a continuous fixed story line, there is a sense of freedom watching Parham as he takes the audience on an adventure exploring imagination and creativity.  Parham does a fantastic job of engaging adults and kids alike in his mostly non-verbal, mumbling performance in between each shadow-puppet story. All the while, the audience is left wondering exactly what will come next. The end result is rather amazing.

This is a great show for all ages – kids will appreciate the silliness in the show while adults will be amazed at the level of choreography that has gone into creating the shadow puppetry.  At one stage Parham was lying on his back using his feet, arms and mouth to create a story about a couple playing a game of chess which was mesmerizing.

This award-winning show is truly unique, quirky, creative and clever and will have audience members of all-ages engaged, intrigued and amused.
